Training

CBAM seeks to inspire and inform students, clinicians, researchers, and public health professionals through mentoring, seminars and other training activities. Watch our blog and Facebook posts for upcoming presentations or skim through our presentations and resources page to find links to manuscripts, manuals and presentations.

Integrating Behavioral and Addiction Medicine into Primary Care

CBAM engages in active collaborations with government, community and nonprofit organizations to integrate behavioral and addiction medicine into primary and specialty care clinics. Our expertise in this area began at home in the UCLA Department of Family Medicine. Here we developed an integrated model of service that engages staff and clinicians. We also worked through the intricacies of billing for addiction and behavioral services and addressed issues of confidentiality.

Community Education

CBAM staff and faculty conduct regular presentations and trainings in the community on the topics of Addiction and HIV/AIDS. We work closely with the County of Los Angeles to train its network of community clinics and service providers.

Mentoring and Consultation

Our faculty mentor undergraduates, residents, and fellows from multiple departments within the University. As a frequent participant in the National Institute on Drug Abuse’s summer intern program, underrepresented undergraduate students are given opportunities to develop basic research skills as they engage in research activities under the direction of one of our faculty mentors.

Medical Residents and Fellows are given opportunities to observe clinicians working with addiction patients in our clinics and to be observed as they work with these patients. In addition, they are trained in structured, psychiatric interviewing techniques and cognitive behavioral therapy.

Our Faculty also provide individual mentorship to junior researchers, many of whom have gone on to receive career development awards and other research funding, and to community providers looking to develop research.

Capacity Building

CBAM staff provides capacity building services to a wide range of organizations involved with the treatment and prevention of HIV/STIs. For example, we provide technical assistance on conducting evidence-based HIV interventions that have been evaluated for efficacy among high-risk populations. For organizations that need assistance with grant development, CBAM staff help with proposal reviews, literature searches, study or program design and evaluation. We also offer consultation to help program development staff identify a target population for an intervention, change an existing program to address a different target population, and/ or measure program outcomes and data. CBAM staff members can also teach agencies to understand their local epidemic by interpreting research and epidemiological data.
