In 2013, we profiled a young researcher. Ms. Annette Grotheer spent 10 weeks with CBAM as part of a NIDA-funded summer research program. She then finished her undergraduate degree and went on to graduate school at Tufts, where she designed and conducted a research project to track cases of cervical cancer in Kenya.

After completing her research, Annie went on to complete further coursework in order to apply to medical school. She was recently accepted to the University of Colorado, School of Medicine, but she also plans to interview at Tufts University School of Medicine (SOM), Miami Miller SOM and Morehouse SOM. She notes that involvement in programs such as the NIDA Summer Research Program have been critical to her successful acceptance to medical school.

As a physician, Annie hopes to continue working in Africa as well as locally on efforts aimed at increasing prevention of chronic diseases, with specific interest in prevention of unnecessary deaths due to un-diagnosed cervical cancer.
CBAM is thrilled to have played a small part in Annie’s career development.
