“A Conversation With Walter Ling”

CBAM’s Executive Director sat down with his mentor, Walter Ling, MD, to talk about Dr. Ling’s four decades of research developing medications to treat addiction. The interview was recently published in the journal, Addiction.

Dr. Ling has led clinical trials for all three of the medications approved by the FDA to treat opiate dependence – a huge accomplishment in such a small field. He describes his career modestly as a series of fortunate accidents, but the interview makes clear that his success is also the result of a systematic approach to research and his very honest and realistic view of addiction:

“Addiction research makes you realize how much you are interdependent with the people around you.”

“The truth is that addicts and I live in the same world; they know prejudice, rejection and isolation, things I can identify with.”
